Almost lost you on a full moon…

The night enfolded us in its usual euphoria
and I spun about, unusually happy…
unaware of the misery awaiting you and me…
Something in the way I’d started out
and downstairs I knew…
I should’ve stayed up there, with you…
And when I came, you’d found—
there, seeming suddenly broken…
enveloped in the hazy dim light…
Is this some fate’s cruel plot twist
that I have to watch this?
I’d done nothing wrong…
The question tormented me like an endless plunge
into darkness and pain, whether
you should stay… by my side…
I’ve been brought out of my past
into all the swallowed tears, facing
my incompleteness without you…
And when you’d said you wanted me still
you’d never leave me again
I wanted to die from the incredible pain…
I thought I should die
for ever having hurt you at all…
without ever meaning to… I never want to…
Every move you made sent knives
shuddering through me, leaving me alone
with nightmares which I awoke from shivering…
Why do you still want me…
why do you still look at me…
I cannot live with the thought that I’d done you wrong…
How could I have let
my bitterness almost ruin all I had
the reason I live… how could I let loose my past…
Had you left, as I thought I deserved…
I’d never have lived beyond tomorrow
I could never face another day…
