And I resisted…

There, under my hand, the chance to
unfold and remember… in a tangle: its thick history…
there under my hand, too close and forbidden!
Too tempting to think back to… the enigmatic, musty folds
to much feeling attached, to handle its secret joys safely,
tantalizingly strung out to dry now, bitten with dust, like relics
of a lost and ancient time… no longer sweetened,
treasured but quite forgotten… and its secrets in its bowels…
there it waited for me, as always… second nature as waking—
and I resisted…
with meaningless words stringing their protest, grasping
with conviction and boiling flames, hysterically ignored
burning at my chains like a storm raging at a mountain,
its pursuits measuring up to all but reason, the mere idea a gloat—
all this was the fight with temptation and adventure,
the testing of the limits… getting farther till the road can’t bear it…
all the while running you up to the coldest peak
there, forever to sleep…
as a resting place, far away
the fantasy escape…
wherein
I lay…
