III. Depression the True
Age Group: Adult
As the legacy of Heart continues
the Agonizing’s place was taken by Depression the True;
for once, no tear nor objection came
for there was no evidence of oppression in this blue’s reign
as he stepped onto his throne he softly asked
for beautiful Lady Sorrow’s hand
and seeing their immediate understanding
the bonding’s troublesome nature was remarkably undemanding
the Fool quietly and mournfully went into hiding
while Lady Joy silently watched the binding
Solace and Comfort roamed freely about
but from Heart’s home, Depression had shut them out
and soon to the king a daughter was born,
she became Lady Illusion, who shimmered at each dusk and dawn.
Not long after she and Joy became friends after a shy start
so as a gift Illusion projected to the Outside Joy’s unmistakable mark;
Illusion’s father supported this scheme
for it left his reign undisturbed and lulled Outsiders into a pleasant dream
…the lines spun out of its whimsical control
nights grew long and deep
from wakefulness to succinct sleep
and the Weaver, Patience, simply let the events unfold…
Depression the True’s reign went peacefully
but amidst reciting his epitaphs he suspected some sort of folly
and knew this foul play could only mean the arrival of Lord Hate
so he set his blue knights positioned in wait,
but it was not Lord Hate who came…
it was the old man Guilt, who’d been exiled in the Molester’s reign
he returned with his beating stick and hot brand,
he placed his weights on each and every hand
and even Depression was caught in surprise
by the unmistakable bitterness in the old man’s eyes;
at least Depression was satisfied to know
that the old fox Lord Lies could not come through the same door.
Comfort rebelliously refused to soothe Depression’s suddenly taut nerves
His agitation from possible invasion went deliberately unheard…
The next piece that flittered into my eyes,
was Lord Longing in Lord Suffering’s disguise…
Longing sat down across the blue king
and discussed tactics as would have Lord Suffering
but just as Depression rose to depart
a sudden need ripped his very soul apart—
Longing unmasked himself in the face of his king’s majestic blue
and in fascinated horror came the end of Depression the True…
