I wish every smile would last…

You see this smile? that smile on me…
you hear these notes? the ballad so foreign…
you see the irony? how it all mingled into one
you feel the cuts in me? how more and more come…
and I know…
I know I’m healing…
I know it’ll pass…
but I wish every single smile
would be one that would last…
You see that smile… I’ve forgotten how
all of it is obscuring my mind
that smile is no longer to be found… in any state of mind
you see that smile… it’s a lie
because my hand covers my mouth to suppress
the unquenchable cry,
as the hurt pounds at me… but futilely…
I won’t let it hurt…
yet it succeeds in piercing me,
it succeeds in humiliating me…
and I know…
I know I’m healing…
I know it’ll pass…
but I wish every single smile
would be one that would last…
You see that face…
it’s no longer mine…
that face has disappeared without a trace
but her wounded soul somehow lives on…
I’m healing… so slowly…
I’ll heal until no one knows me,
for all I’ve changed…
Had I no one, perhaps the knife would have stung
and though the wound would be burning on,
my life force would have been long gone…
but I have, and yet it sometimes
means so little… just making the storm cloud
weep a mere light drizzle,
and I know…
I know I’m healing…
I know it’ll pass…
but I wish every single smile
would be one that would last…
The cold lips of a girl I once saw,
the unicorn trapped inside,
the secret forest her eyes do hide—
yes, I feel like her now…
despair, and the first of her kind
to feel regret…
its not a story I can easily forget…
and I know…
I know I’m healing…
I know it’ll pass…
but I wish every single smile
would be one that would last…
Well, perhaps it’s time
to just put it all aside.
maybe when I wake up tomorrow
I won’t have anything to hide…
yet I know, in evidence that it happened
when I look in the mirror it seems cracked and blackened,
and my smile has been erased…
for once it was so fixed and true,
and now it’s gone…
without a bloody trace…
it’s been done to me, I say
that’s the only answer I’ll swallow anyway,
I won’t believe… no matter how I try
that the reason I grieve… is for something I knew
since time was time, it seems…
all those harsh dreams, never—
I say Never let them take you away!
don’t forget, please don’t! that you still have
one little piece that’s yours alone…
don’t fly without each feather in place,
or you’ll join me on the unwelcoming, stone ground…
Where’s my renowned charm? what went wrong…
how is it possible for anyone to say that
unless everyone I’ve ever met was lying…
am I truly just a speck of dust on someone’s list?
a trifle, a kind one, but one that ultimately doesn’t exist?
what is that smile! a refreshment after a long, hard rain?
I’d no idea that I’m just there to take away pain
without ever being given
a true chance…
And now I have to leave it behind
without a backwards glance.
and I know…
I know I’m healing…
I know it’ll pass…
but I wish every single smile
would be one that would last…
