Maria Makiling

Maria Makiling, the mountain spirit,
Gentle yet vengeful,
She protects nature and all that is in it,
Oh how she's beautiful.
With her sparkling eyes and olive skin,
She makes men lusty and crazy
In the mountain hut in the mountain within,
She is a beautiful, rare daisy.
Mess with her, have luck,
For she will be angered,
Thou shall never mock,
Or the curse is whispered.
As a mother, give her respect,
Bow to her with love and grace,
This thou shall never neglect,
My, I think of her for days.
A spirit, A soul, A guide,
She is my goddess I confide.
Author's Notes: Maria Makiling is a "diwata" (a respected spirit similar to a faerie) who lives in Mt.Makiling, a mountain in the province of Laguna in the Philippines. Maria Makiling is one of the most famous diwatas or forest spirits in Philippine Mythology. One legend says that a mother living on the mountain went to look for a cure for her ailing child. The child was ill because of hunger. Maria Makiling kindly gave some ginger to the mother but when the mother went back to her home, the ginger turned into gold and with enough money, her child was cured.
