invokation to Zeus

Invokation to Zeus
(From Aeschylus, 460 B.C.E.)
O Realm, O Land and clear water,
Ye gods on high and Ye nether powers,
That inhabits the mountain peaks.
That inhabits the storm clouds.
Thou, Zeus the Saviour, who art invoked third,
The guardian of the habitations of righteous men,
Receive as supplicants we who invoke thee,
With the compassionate spirit of the land.
Now I invoke thee, our champion from beyond the
great sea, to Him I cry for succour.
If haply there be nigh a land-dweller who knoweth
the notes of the children of air, when our plaint greets
his ear, he will fancy that he hears the voice of the
hawk-chased nightingale. For She, constrained to depart
the green leaves, ever maketh dolorous lament for Her
wonted haunts, and for Her child, Dionysus, victim of
Her terrible wrath. Hail the Thrice-born son of Zeus.
Ye god of our race, hearken unto me,
And to thy altarand thy children shelter against harm.
Zeus, vouchsave that in truth it shall go well for us,
We who guard the earth from despoilers.
Let Him look upon the outrage wrought by avaricious men,
And let Him use us as His instruments as guardians
therein.
Let us live then for honor and service, penitent,
yet bold, for quest is mortal glory and achievement
the fire in which the spirit burns.
All people are the same person
With heads turned along separate paths.
All lives are the same life
When death joins them together,
And sets them forth again.
