Birch

The silver branches reach out
Like slender, silver, most devout
White robed priestess in the night
When the moon is very bright.
The branches rustle, sweetest voices
Promise, prophesy and giving choices
Ghost to lay to rest, and cast out regret
Here in the birch, find the future met.
Beat the bounds with twigs from tree
And then all discontent so it will flee
Besoms clear the house in exorcism
Banish thoughts of pessimism.
The end of one year, the next begins
The Maiden goes, the Crone now thins
The White Hand of this sacred tree
Death reaching out, the end to be.
The partridge sounds lonesome cries
As within the silver wood, it flies
Now Spirit of the wood seeks love
Calling forth, as wings above.
