Remembering

The cold wind blows on the hill top
There stone tomb stands on outcrop
Great stones pulled and placed just so
An ancient place of worship long ago
Where tribal priests lit sacred flames
Called to tribal gods of many names
Even today, a holly posy has been left
With candle, remembrance for bereft.
Not far away is another sacred space
One thousand years ago, they embrace
Another creed, small church built here
Over time, more stones came to appear
The church grew, and there on this day
Candles are lit, remember those who lay
Entrusting to God departed generations
Praying for peace to come to all nations.
Away from the country, the public square
Normally mundane, now shows new care
There candlelit vigil for earthquake dead
People come all day, no words are said
But the piper is playing mournful lament
At this sacred space, upon this sad event
We take a yellow ribbon, place it on tree
Thousands flutter, more than eye can see.
