My Words / The Nazarene

by Jemma Hawtrey
 Age Group: Adult

My Words / The Nazarene
I am but a simple man A worker with his hands I live on a lake shore In a world of shifting sands
Over years and years I worked Over those same years I thought And I found my way of seeing things That mayhap should be taught
So to my friends I talked at first As they passed oft along their way I shared minutes of my life As we watched young children play
And soon the time they bring others To listen, quiet, to my words And still they’d sit from dawn to dusk Heedless of the bell calls of the passing herds
But then they massed as crowds around And my name, as you say, was up in lights The mangled bodies kept alive to tell Their twisted tales over tortured nights
I cant say when it caught me When I saw the dark iris in the light But ‘no more’ was our resolve And if needed, we would fight
And I came into ‘your’ city That which you stole from mine You mis-called me ‘King of the Jewish’ And you resolved for me my sign
You judged and found me wanting A justice of nothing by name And you made the death of a simple man A pawn in your political game
Rome is a city of great mercy There was none in what you showed me Hung up on a mighty cross to die Where agony won’t let you be
Finally when my life was passed And the sun without me shone You tortured those who loved me most Delighted in the telling, the Nazarene is gone
That was so many years ago And much has passed since then The Rome of your limitless mercy Will never be such again
But many took my words to heart And to the world in a form they passed They stand even now in your future ‘tho your Rome is ruined and downcast.
And there, that delicious irony That from a simple man’s ray of light By the very Empire that destroyed him Has become something so blinding bright
So blinding bright in the deep red of blood As for the words meaning so many fight So blinding bright of the glittering gold That will race a heart long grown stone cold So blinding bright in the gleeful inks Where words condemn as the burning stinks
I am but that simple man Seeing what you made of what I said I can never be your Son of God I’m just that simple man, long dead.
