Hellfire caves revisited

by Ankerwytch

Age Group: Adult

Twinkling tea lights lined the route
From cave mouth to the river
Casting shadows, spooky shapes
Causing us to shiver

Pagans running, dressed to kill
Cloaks and masks beguiling
Wanting to join in the throng
Anticipation, smiling

Stumbling through the passageways
The sound of murmured voices
A disembodied clarion call
Left them with no choices

Dusty shoes and muddied cloaks
Would they never get there?
Then suddenly the cave appeared
And caused them all to stare

Could they step into this cave
A parallel universe?
A magickal scene unfolded then
To depart would be worse

A strange sight filled the cavern
Of flickering candle light
The smell of incense filled the air
And filled them with delight

Into the cave they boldly stepped
Into another world
They blinked then to adjust their sight
Watched as the scene unfurled

Witches swaying to the rhythm
Of bewitching drum
Intriguing masks adorned them
And added to the fun

Spiral dances, haunting music
Stamping, whirling feet
Mesmerising, dreamlike trance
All moving with the beat

The drumbeat rhythm picked up pace
The spirits made an entry
The watchtowers stood by to protect
But then stood down each sentry

Come on in and join our dancing
Spirits all rejoice
The veil is at its thinnest now
We all sing with one voice

Let us all touch souls tonight
Tonight we are as one
United once again are we
And we will have our fun

Then midnight came – the witching hour
A time we had to brave
We mounted on our besoms
And flew out of the cave

Most made for home full throttle
But one, stewed as a newt
Looped the loop over the caves
A fly past and salute!
