The dragon and the nightingale

by Pangur-ban
 Age Group: Adult

In a cave on the side of a steep mountain lived a Dragon by the name of Fyre. Fyre was a very sad and lonely Dragon, and every day he would curl up on his golden hoard and sigh. “Oh is there no chance of love for me?” he would think to himself. Fyre was so sure that he was going to die from his loneliness (as we all know dragons can will themselves out of existence) . In another part of the kingdom, Moonrose a nightingale was going about her business, which was to sing great songs of joy to the Goddess of the kingdom. Moonrose was named after the most beautiful flower in the land that only flowered at a full moon. Now Moonrose had not had a happy life and was finding it harder and harder to sing her songs of praise to the Goddess. Now the Goddess of this land was aware of their plight so she started to hatch a plan to bring them together the Goddess knew that for such a tiny bird the nightingale had such a big heart, and all she needed to do was get her to hear the dragons plight. The next day the nightingale went to her favourite spot to sing opened her beak and nothing came out she was struck dumb. Then she heard a voice in her mind “do not try to sing little one, ” it said. Is that really you said Moonrose Yes it is I said the Goddess now just open your mind and listen. Therefore, the nightingale opened her mind and soon heard the faint cries of Fyres despair and knew he would soon die. Oh please tell me where he is begged the nightingale he is so lonely. Are you sure little one asked the Goddess it is very far and a long and dangerous flight to get to the Dragon Mountains . Please oh please tell me begged Moonrose once more, so armed with the directions of she flew, The flight was indeed long and arduous but eventually she arrived at the Dragon Mountains she flew straight into Fyres cave. On seeing the dragon, she was filled with love for him. Please do not give up she cried to the dragon there is one who loves you. On hearing this Fyre was filled with joy, but how can this be I am a dragon and you are a nightingale. Suddenly they were aware they were not alone the Goddess was with them. They both bowed low before Her, please rise she said I have something to ask you. Do you really want to be together and become as one. Oh yes they both replied we are sure. As they said this, a transformation took place no longer a dragon and nightingale but in their place a man and woman and the rest is yet to come. However, it is sure to be legendary. Pangur-ban 2007
