Pulling the plug

We were the talk of the town.
the couple of the hour.
Ours was supposed to be
the love story of the century
if not the millenia.
But this was to be a story
cut short, no lengthy novel here.
Though the story was short there
were clichés enough to fill libraries.
You the scarlet woman.
Him the cuckoo in the nest.
Me the biggest cliché of all
the unsuspecting one.
When your story has become a
television soap opera
what can you do but pull the plug.
