Masks

Comic or tragic,
which one shall I wear today?
Masks to let the world
see what I want them to see.
To paper over the cracks
that threaten to let loose
a torrent of emotions
kept in check by a strong will.
Afraid in case the dam breaks.
When did I become so adept
at decorating, papering over the cracks,
and applying a brand new coat
of paint to cover a tarnished spirit
making it look brand new.
I have no need of a makeover team
as I do the job so well.
What I need is to regain the openness
I had as a child, to learn once more
to wear my heart on my sleeve.
To strip away the masks, and
wear my emotions where they can be seen
not hidden inside known only to myself.
To let the dam break loose
and let my feelings stream forth
washing away the debris of the years.
