Winters Queen

Age Group: Adult
Winter winds snatch autumns finery
from the trees leaving them bear.
The fripperies of red, gold and bronze
that mother nature had garlanded her
world with snatched away
leaving behind skeletons,
with their branches reaching skyward
as if imploring the Gods to spare them
the fury of the ice queens blast.
But their prayers are in vain,
she will not be denied.
This is her time now and her heart is hardened,
their supplications fall on deaf ears.
So these mighty ones turn their thoughts
inward, and stand steadfast against
the onslaught of winters cold
that threatens to freeze their blood,
and burst their hearts asunder.
But this time is not bereft of beauty for
one morning the trees stir to find that
this queen they thought so cold and stern
has frosted their branches so they glistened
in the weak winters sun like the diamonds
that sparkle in her hair and adorn her dress.
This beauty warms their souls making winter
seem more bearable till spring comes once more.
