The longest night
by Pangur-ban
Age Group: Adult
Long winters night
The smell of smoke
Fills the air from
A fire burning in
Some homely hearth.
Beams of moonlight
Bathe the forest reflecting
From frost covered branches
Turning the trees into
Beings of magic.
You walk the path
That takes you deeper
And deeper into the
Forests depth, all around
Are the scurrying sounds
Of the creatures of the night.
Suddenly the clearing is before
You and there is the cottage
Smoke curlig sky wards from
Its chimney evidence of a
welcoming fire
Go in the door is not locked
Not on this the longest night
Of the year, the night of yule.
Smell the sharp scent of
The pine boughs that
Decorate the mantle and
Hang from every beam.
And yet you are on your own
the cottage deserted.
Should there not be others
To celebrate this night with you?
Then you hear the sound
Of voices raised in excitement
And you wonder who will be
The first to join you and
Celebrate the returning sun.
