Crow Feather

Crow feather.
Feathers rain down black as night
Gifts from brother Crow.
“Use them wisely” he bids
In his croaky rasping voice.
So, what shall I do with these
Soft obsidian feathers, shed like rain,
From the mischievous body
Of the ghost dance bird
Into my mind unbidden comes
The Idea to craft a mask
As dark as the midnight sky
And as soft as the caress of sleep.
Putting it on the command to dance.
Enters my thoughts, but I am reluctant.
Dance! I am once again commanded
So slowly, hesitantly I start to sway.
Suddenly I am sky born, aloft held there
By the silky black wings that have
Replaced my arms: I am free cut of
From the earth in an ecstasy of flight.
Joining me in the freedom of flight
Are more crows resplendent in black
Our cries fill the early morning air
As we wheel and dive in utter joy.
Then the ecstasy is over and I am back
To find I am not alone in my dance.
The crows that shared my joyous flight
Dance beside me as kindred spirits of the Crow.
