The Forest of my Heart
by Pangur-ban
Age Group: Adult
The Forest of my heart
stands tall and proud.
Old, old trees gnarly and
moss festooned.
Home to all manner of life.
They sustain me to
with their beauty,
setting my heart free to roam
among their branches and commune
with those that roam with me
squawking birds
chattering squirrels,
all of them my brethren.
Set free also to plunge
and follow
the map of roots
deeper,
deeper,
far beneath the ground
the smell of ripe earth
an incense in my nostrils.
Here to I find my brethren
among the small
scurrying things that dwell there
that one day my mortal remains
will sustain.
This forest of my heart
sustains,
inspires
I carry it with me
always and everywhere.
