Midsummer's Night

Age Group: Adult
Day draws drowsily to a close.
The cloudless blue sky,
Now showing natures handiwork
A red toned shepherds delight.
Summoned home by tolling church bells
My feet disturb the sweet meadow grass
Sending clouds of midges skywards
To be pursued by swift winged birds.
The sky a darker hue now as night falls
I pause to rest beneath the Hawthorn tree.
( A tree of fairy renown )
And lay my head against its trunk.
Waking with a start! A face peers down
From the leafy canopy above.
Wake up you sluggard this apparition says
I Puck summon you to the revels of my King and Queen.
Wiping the sleep from my eyes they widen
In surprise. Before me the fairy court is revealed.
Stately and tall Fairy Lords incline their heads,
Partnered By Fairy Queens of beauty rare.
Music of ethereal delight fills the air,
Heralding dances of gay abandon,
While fairy bards tell tales heroes of old.
The night draws forever on.
Then I am led to tables laden with
The food of the Gods and I am bid to eat my fill.
Oh no says I this I cannot do
For if I do home I never can go.
In bower green I lay my head on the breast
Of a jewel winged beauty and sleep once more.
To wake again all befuddled and bemused.
Oh well I say it was just a midsummer's dream
