Ice Cold Sea
by Moonlight Wolf
Age Group: Adult
The sea was before me
Waves rising and falling
In a great crescendo,
Thundering out as the tide
Began to make it's way
Across the near deserted beach.
Rolling up my jeans
Revealing my shins to the sand
I leave my trainers upon the rocks,
Brace myself before
Scurrying across the wet sand.
My feet leave light imprints
Upon the murky beige
That is a British beach.
Long, thin and incomplete
The middle missing and
Toes barely visible.
I wade into the sea
Not sparkling blue
Like that of the Med
But a murky brown
Filled with sandy particles,
Silt and slippery seaweed.
The water is freezing
My soles are only warmed
By the sand beneath me
As my narrow feet
Grains of sand sliding between my toes.
The sea roars and waves crash
The tide is creeping in,
Creeping past a rusty wreck
Dragged up from the seabed.
Wind blows through the wisps
That have escaped from the tag
That binds my hair behind my head.
It is silenced by the roaring sea.
My calves and feet
Numb themselves to the freezing water
That once felt so cold when I first waded in
But now just feels cool.
It is not so bad after a few seconds.
The water rides up over my lower shins
As I wade in a little further
Feeling my feet sink in
Wherever I happen to put them.
It is half way up my calves
And a great wave rushes up
And embraces my knees
And soaks the fold in my jeans.
It is time to head back.
I turn away from the roaring sea
And steadily tread towards land.
The water lowers around my legs,
Then my ankles and feet
Before disappearing altogether.
The warm sand welcomes my feet.
I see my previous prints
Showing my path to the sea.
The toes are barely visible
And the middle is not there.
I allow my jeans to drop
Shielding my lower legs
From the rushing wind,
Chilling, especially for the wet.
Retrieving my trainers from the rock
I head back to the level concrete
Where members of my family
Wonder at my madness
As I towel down my lower legs
And run the towel between my toes
To get all the sand out
Before putting my trainers back on
And giving the sea one last look
Before we decide to head to the main street.
Author's Notes: I'll admit it's not the wisest thing to do when it's a cold, windy and threatening to rain day, paddling in the sea. Do not try this in Winter folks. It was definately worth the cold water but take it from me, only do this Summer unless you happen to be in a hot country at the time.
