Midnight Churchyard

Snow hushed midnight in the churchyard
The stained glass windows bright hue
Reflected on virgin snow.
Parishioners summoned by insistent bells
Trudge through the snow
Twinkling eyes shining from
Beneath hat and scarf.
Their tribute of praise to bring.
Homeward then they wend their way,
To warm fires in the hearth
And hot chocolate in steaming mugs.
Much later the hush has returned
And a different, more ancient scene unfolds
Neath Yew trees laden with ice,
As if they were made of Winter crystal.
There in a patch of moon lit snow
Stands the mighty stag avatar of the forest Lord
Who in this winter chill is reborn to bring
Light to the world and hope to our hearts.
Then one by one his forest kin
Their bright eyes twinkling their hearts full
Bend in benediction before their Lord.
Unwatched save by one and that one me.
I to bend the knee in adoration my heart
Filled with awe and hope just as theirs.
