An Alphabet of Pagans- E is for Educated

Age Group: Adult
So with their many books
On various aspects of Paganism.
Adler, Bonewits, Hutton.
Translated poems;
The Mabignon, Gods and Fighting Men.
Multitudes of background information
Just to be sure that they know
The difference between
Good and bad history,
Sources of inspiration
And scholarly discussion.
Their bibliography of course
Could be an entire chapter
Of many works and essays
Upon various matters.
If the Tarot comes in
They can tell you
Why the Major Arcana
Is in the order it's in,
The various figures
From Renaissance Europe
And Catholicism.
If they also do astrology
They will know the myths
And the associations of the planets
And can give an entire page worth
Of footnotes and endnotes.
Of course this is all fine
Yet some of these Educated Pagans
May go around with
Their noses perpendicular
To the ground they walk on.
They shun all those who
Have read less than they
Regardless of age
Regardless of how long
They have walked their path
Regardless of the path they walk
Regardless of how much time they have
Regardless of how other people learn.
Regardless of intelligence
Regardless of experience
They believe that anyone
Who has read less than they have
To be inferior and unworthy
To walk their path.
Education of course
Is a good thing
But why do some Educated Pagans
Feel the need to preach this
While looking down their noses
At the 'fluffy bunnies?'
Does a holier than thou attitude
Towards education and knowledge
Encourage others to learn?
Or does it cause them to run
To avoid becoming stuffy
With their heads higher
Than they really need to be.
So with their books
And their essays
Their libraries and websites
Their organisational skills
All polished to perfection.
Some are excellent teachers
Some have the potential to teach
So long as their heads are level
With the ground they walk on.
Author's Notes: I'm all for education but it's a bit much when these oh-so-much-more-educated-than-you types decide to dominate the scholarly circles and sites with disdainful snobbery. It's one thing to educate those less knowledgeable than you are and guide them towards the best information but its another to make fun and put them down, simply for not having all the info you have. Call me critical, but the latter behaviour isn't going to make people want to educate themselves.
Anyhow, that's another one out of the way.
