An Alphabet of Pagans- F is for Flash

Age Group: Adult
Pentacles the size of heads
Enough Pagan bumper stickers
To fill an entire wall
Statues with no significance
And an altar with no attention.
Pagan rock lines the CD shelf
And modern Pagan paintings
Line every wall and door
Of the flash Pagan's life.
A few fairy figurines
Lie next to a vampire statue
Alongside Isis or Demeter
Keyrings with carvings
Of Brigid and Cernunnos
Adorn their house keys
And celtic knotwork jewellry
Jangles from their wrists.
A few Gothic Pagan shops
And stalls that are overrun
With dream catchers and windchimes
Are where they like to go.
Do they know at all
What their pentacle signifies
Have they done any research
On the slogans on those stickers
No, that would ruin the image
Of the contemporary flash Pagan.
They dress to bring airs and graces
Of mystery and power
Their nose is high in the air
As they look down on the world.
To look up the folklore
Of fairies or vampires
To look up the myths
Of Isis or Demeter
To go and research
Brigid or Cernunnos
Is never a part
Of the flash Pagan's life.
Never mind that
Fairies love to steal children
Never mind that vampires
Bring out the base and dark
Never mind that Isis and Demeter
Slept with their brothers
To produce their offspring.
Never mind that Cernunnos
Is Lord of beasts that
Tear the flesh off their prey's bones.
Never mind that Brigid
Can forge weapons as well as ideas.
The flash Pagan has
No interest in these.
Looks are all that matter
Paraphenalia to the ceiling
None of it ever significant
What matters is how cool it looks.
For superficiality
Is the flash Pagan's game
For them any substance
Does not exist
Or is not important.
Blessed Be
(Because it looks cool.)
Author's Notes: Yes that last line is there for irony. I have nothing against the Pagan who has the odd bumper sticker for humour purposes but it's a bit much when you have twenty bumper stickers to try and 'look' the part. I don't think I'm the only one who finds this a bit annoying at times, when people say they are Pagan because they or their room look Pagan and ignore any meaning to the objects and symbols that they have on display.
