An Alphabet of Pagans- S is for Subcultural

by Moonlight Wolf
 Age Group: Adult

There are many subcultures But some mix it with religion. For some it is about the look And believe that it is An absolute requirement For being a Pagan.
Some mix their subculture And do their best To incorporate their tastes With their religion.
Some who are Goth Who believe this is required Are more about looks. They wear the pentacle In order to look Gothic Because they know That it is an occult symbol That Wiccans use like The Christians use the Cross.
They wear black all the time Claiming that this is How a Pagan or Wiccan should look Much to the annoyance of other Pagans.
Some who are Hippies Who believe that this is required Believe that you must Buy only ethical products, Become an activist, Do all you can for the environment, Treat all beings with respect And do all you can to help Fairtrade.
However there are those from both Who incorporate both subculture And their religion and it works for them.
Goths who choose to worship Underworld deities and Go deep into the occult In order to study themselves And in order to face their fears. These people themselves can be Incredibly deep.
Hippies who champion Various causes Who are members of Greenpeace Or perhaps Amnesty International Who work tirelessly To do their bit to make The world a better place for all In the name of their Gods. These people are incredibly admirable.
Some in Subcultural Pagans Are incredibly shallow While others are deep. Here is a hypothetical And possibly strange example
A shallow surfer Pagan Would go around saying That Hawaiian shirts and shorts Are right for it because Pagans are supposed to be About nature and they like being outdoors.
A deep surfer Pagan Would explain that they Worship sea and sun Gods Or Gods of tropical climes As part of their religion Because they like the sea And warm sunny weather.
The two types of Subcultural Pagan Are shown here One shallow and superficial One deep and adapting.
Author's Notes: I'll admit the surfer example is probably not all that common but it was the best hypothetical one I could think of that would fit both. (The chav and fashionista Pagans would fit one but not the other.) Anyway Goth and Hippie are usually the most common that are around. Does anyone else have another subculture in mind that may be either superficial or have the potential to be deep.
Next Time: T is for Tenacious
