Gwion's Fate

by Moonlight Wolf
 Age Group: Adult

At the 'neath of the lake The great potion he takes And he knew of all Earth, Sea and Sky. He then knew what would be So he took off to flee Hearing Cerridwen's furious cries.
And he changed to a hare Lest She saw him right there And he sped off across grass and ground. But She saw his quick flight And as fast as the light She shifted into a greyhound.
Over the hills and the dales With the howls and the wails She chased him with maximum speed. The hare and greyhound Changed again once they found A running and sparkling stream.
Salmon he became To flee once again And She turned into otter bitch. He leapt and he swam, Through the water he ran To flee from this furious witch.
Then in a flash of an eye They took to the sky. Fins and fur they changed into wings. He a sparrow did dart With great fear in his heart. As a hawk She did follow him.
Tiring now of this chase, Fearing death in the face He shifted to a grain of wheat Cerridwen, sharp eyed saw And She shifted once more As a hen, the thief She did eat.
As the months went on by Cerridwen let a cry, The stirring of life She felt within. For that small piece of grain Was a babe once again. When born She vowed to kill him.
Yet when the child was born So beautifully formed She relented yet still was angry. So at first morning light In a bag sealed up tight She flung him out into the sea.
In the bag he was bound 'Til by chance he was found By his foster father a great prince. The child looked upon now With a radiant brow He was named the great bard Taliesin.
