A Perfect Autumn Day

I just love days like today. It has been the perfect Autumnal day with the sky a perfect cloudless cerulean blue. Just enough wind to chill your face with the knowledge that Winter is not far away.
Soon the wildfowl will be returning to Radipole lake (my sacred place) Swans from Arctic climbs who make the journey in one marathon flight, oh how tired they must be. Soon also the lake will be filled with ducks. Teal, Widgeon, Pintail, the list is endless, but all here for one thing which is to breed and ensure their survival as a species.
Sometimes especially at dawn and dusk there is a cacophony of sound as they all seem to want to speak at once. At this time of year Starlings roost, (unfortunately not with the numbers that they used to.) Once roosts numbered in thousands, and in some places in there millions. They perform an aerial ballet swooping and gliding in an ever changing pattern without any collisions. Death stalks them though in the shape of Sparrow hawks on the look out for an easy meal.
Rarely now though does the lake freeze, so you do not see the comical sight of Swans, Ducks, and Geese trying to land on slippery ice. Imagine the shock as they land on what they thought was water.
The lake is special to me in fact it is somewhere that I carry with me in my mind and psyche in fact wherever I travel.
