The Voice of Dissent

When the voice of dissent has been silenced
by censorship, sackings, new laws,
Will you be concerned or will you
feel sure that they had a good cause?
When the voice of dissent has been silenced,
inadmissible as defence in the court,
will you be worried or will you
just trust in the judge's report?
When the voice of dissent has been silenced
by rioting, death threats and fear,
Will you be alarmed or will you
think that never happens round here?
When the voice of dissent has been silenced
by beatings and shots in the night,
Will you be shocked or will you
only go out when it's light?
If not for the voice of dissenters
and the price that some had to pay,
we would not even have all the freedoms
we're losing in Europe today.
