The Edge People

The Edge People
They guard every street corner
They watch wary as you pass
You worry for your safety
For they are the edge class
They walk alone, unsteady step
Talking to the ghostly air
They have stories if you ask them
But you just can’t seem to care
These are the edge people
The ones who just don’t seem to fit
Who, as you laugh and smile,
Cold, tired and hungry, sit.
But think on this as you walk your way
You who wear the world so well
And you who’d sell your friends
To see your pay check swell
The old woman may be dirty
And the old man, ripe may smell
But at least they’d pick each other up
And see each other well.
A pay rise is not important
When a listening ear may save a life
Or being there at the right time
To halt the killer’s knife
That old woman she lost her daughter
The old man lost a much-loved wife
Now they wander their worlds together
A sad resemblance of family life
So when you walk the early morning
Past the lonely and forlorn.
Give the Edge People your smile
Leave the others to cast the scorn.
