The Cross-Piece Idol

by Jemma Hawtrey
 Age Group: Adult

The Cross-Piece Idol
Cracked and aged your arms stand Whilst you hang on wall; the all Enjoined to worship you – stand A’fearing of their dark fall Your wood part burnt and pitted; stands As in past it cruelly held those hands; Of saviour, the living standing dead, Silent and thence renewed Now gone to distant unknown lands And we, who look, look so told Of he who walked once in days of old; his hands To the myriad lost hearts of His lands But now we go all drifting abed A fear of future dancing in the head; the men Who held your esteem most high; write with poison pen So others who know you not must cruelly die And thus to you I turn my back To listen thence to jaded hack; he enthuses And he squats on another’s lack; as her life she looses So my book will be fine natures bark; the sap to be my pen And my will be that I write of Her light & dark; To better lance your dark and aging bitter Wen. For we both stand on different courses set; yours of the way The one to abjure and one to give free let; Just as I who greet the day; And those alike will preside over future’s play

Author's Notes: Wen : An old word for a growth usually of malodourous character. Nowadays a similar characterisation would be a cancer or something similar. In former times, and indeed currently in some countries a birthmark could be seen as a Wen.
I am not sure as to the words provenance, it may be a dialect word, although the little I know of it seems to indicate it was at least present in east anglia and the midlands, it might therefore be a corruption of an OE or ME derivation...?
