The Cycle of the Year King

A new King has been chosen for the coming year,
Brought forth to still the peoples fear,
The supreme sacrifice of the Horned God of the Sky,
After a short life and a sweet one, he is destined to die.
After a year’s holy marriage to the Queen of the Earth,
Her dark mysteries to quicken for the mysteries of birth,
That the Gods might look kindly on the doings of men,
And give them fair measure of the things that they ken.
For the dead who are buried in an Earthly tomb,
And that life may yet stir in a barren womb,
And the world may still turn in a cycle of time,
For the barley, for the rye, for the quickening of kine.
His body to be torn by the hands of the maids,
In blood-lust and frenzy where all reason fades,
His body and blood ploughed into the furrowed field,
By priests under oath whose very lips are sealed.
That the people might sacrifice on that sacred ground,
Their love in the Earth to the world resound,
Their faith, their love, their happiness,
Renewed by a timely, Kingly, death.
A new King has been chosen for the following year,
Brought forth to still the peoples fear,
The supreme sacrifice of the Horned God of the Sky,
After a short life and a sweet one, he is destined to die.
Author's Notes: I probably wrote this in the 1970s some time after I read Mary Renaults book "The King Must Die"
