Hypatia

by Cyclop
 Age Group: Adult

‘All formal dogmatic religions are fallacious and must never be accepted by self-respecting persons as final’, ‘Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all’ and ‘To teach superstitions as truth is a most terrible thing’. Hypatia of Alexandria 370-415 CE
Murder a mathematician for lent
Hypatia, head of the Platonist school and principal lecturer in mathematics and astronomy at the greatest university in the world – Alexandria – 400 to 415. Daughter of the mathematician Theon, she was a glamorous woman, famed for riding around Alexandria in a chariot, and credited with the invention of the astrolabe and the hydrometer. When christian destruction of pagan temples culminated in rioting and the burning of many books from the great library; Cyril, a fanatical fundamentalist catholic monk, arrived to assist the christian cause. He was supported by the warlike Nitrian monks behaving just like the Taleban, and an equally fanatical mob. They started by murdering half the extensive jewish population of Alexandria during the fast of Lent 415, and driving the rest of the jews out of the city. Confronted by the Emperor’s City Prefect Orestes, and having thought better of seriously attacking him and his soldiers, the Nitrian monks kidnapped Hypatia and dragged her into a church. Hypatia had been one of Orestes friends and one of his principle advisors. She was stripped, lain on the alter, flayed alive with sharpened oyster shells, cut to pieces, and her remains burnt. Cyril promptly declared all the Nitrian monks to be saints and, as St Cyril of Alexandria, is still recognised today as an important christian patriarch, who made valuable contributions to catholic trinitarian dogma. Her commentaries on the Arithmetica of Diophantus, and the Conics of Apollonious were no doubt “magics” and “satanic wiles”, as were all the library’s books, for Cyril is said by John Bishop of Nikiu, to have destroyed the last remains of idolatry in the city. Indeed, Hypatia is claimed by John and many good christians to be the first “witch” to have “suffered the wrath of the church”.
