The Mother's Charge to Her Children

Age Group: Adult
I am the Mother wise and just
Your first knowledge of life and lust
Guardian of that sacred trust
Ye who have little time to cry
Come here to me and ask me why
The Mother’s children are born to die
The hare that runs must fear the hound
May die with harsh and strangled sound
Before he takes a fleeting bound
The fish that swims in rippling stream
May not of the hungry otter dream
And we will not hear his watery scream
The pretty bird that stalks the sky
Where stoops the hawk from up on high
Must only wait his time to die
Grow tall and straight like summer corn
And yet you should not be forlorn
When on your efforts I pour scorn
I spring amongst you swift and lithe
Mow you as a sharp and whetted scythe
And take you for my harvest tithe
So look long upon my pleasant face
A source of wisdom hard to trace
And know the chill of my embrace
Of all knowledge I am the source
Of all pathways I am the course
Inspiration you cannot force.
Why have I brought you onto life
In this world where death is rife
If not merely to cause you strife
For as the tides do ebb and flow
And your life and loves do warmly glow
Your death will serve, my power to show
If we understand it all aright
Death’s but an horizon in the light
An horizon, the limit of your sight
I take back these children all forlorn
Lost not to me when they were born
Lost not to you on their return
Their shades will enter an earthly tomb
Wherein I weave them on my loom
To be reborn from sacred womb
Pass the dreaded gateway meek n’mild
On through in goodly order filed
Perhaps, reborn the Sacred Child.
