An islander's blessing

by PapaRomeo
 Age Group: Adult

Dialect version:
Da wind, sea an' sten Ir wir braeth, bluid an' ben; Gods be aboot wis An' aa 'at we see Fir aa dat is dere Is athin dee an' me.
Standard English:
The wind, sea and stone Are our breath, blood and bone; Gods be about us And all that we see For all that is there Is within you and me.
Author's Notes: Somewhere years ago (possibly 'The Puffin Book of Magical Verse'?) I read that to write a spell down deprives it of power. Whether or no this is true, I've always 'personalised' any published ritual I've used by speaking it in my own local dialect. The Shetland Isles are home to a curious dialect descendant from Old English, Old Scots and Old Norse, which makes for an interesting combination to the unaccustomed ear. 'God be about me...' was a traditional Shetland saining, or blessing, as all things unnatural were supposed to flee from the name of God. This could be used to protect a particular individual (eg, 'God be aboot me an' da bairn') , while 'God be aboot me an' aa dat I see' was an all-encompassing benediction that protected everything in sight. As a child I often used to worry what would happen if you uttered this then blinked... As I've grown up I've come to see 'God' as a name for that which is nameless, and use it in the same way as some would use 'Deity' or 'the Divine', rather than suggest a monotheist patriarch.
