Frozen Hearts and Bleeding Souls (3)

The Wolf on the Fold
Cold winds rose as the sun went down.
Not far off, thunder growled.
Fearful, some trembled in their beds.
A lone wolf, somewhere, howled.
Another! And another still!
The people shook with fear.
A bestial choir sang their lament
For she they once held dear.
Then suddenly the wailing stopped.
The winds fell to mere breath.
The people settled, did not know
That one was there called Death.
Silently he walked about,
Took the measure of his foes.
The Moon gleamed like the Reaper's face
As frosty mist arose.
The vapour drifted high and hid
The village from all sight;
A phantom veil of pallid hue -
The dead look good in white.
Black clouds of anger gathered high,
Filled the clear wintry sky.
He knew their guilt for none could hide
From his all-seeing eye.
He smelled their blood, he heard their breath,
The sleeping men awoke;
His mist was chill; the wind screamed loud;
His storm of fury broke.
Their agony, his ecstasy!
His pleasure was their pain!
His thirst unquenched, but snowfields drenched
With smoking, scarlet rain.
Blood spewed from their wicked hearts,
Ran from his snarling jaws;
Those whose thorn had slain his rose
Now fell before his claws.
Her blood avenged, his work was done;
His wolves to their lairs crept.
He knelt amid the blood and ash
And spoke her name and wept.
Author's Notes: 3 0f 5. Cheerful, n'est pas? ;) A fine example of why teenagers should steer clear of Coleridge, Byron and Stoker.
