The Lesson

Somewhere past evening a dead of night breeze
Spins webs round the moon with thread branches of trees.
A hush of pale mist from the whispering sea
Sings unspoken secrets from Mother to me.
I pray that She teach me the unwritten rules
Of the natural law that enlightens and fools,
Hidden from all with the wisdom to see
Beyond the illusion, with patience to be.
Winter stars burn though the year turns to spring -
Another step round on the seasonal ring.
A foot on each side of the threshold of time.
This moment is held as a breath between rhyme.
Her book is laid open with no written lines
To distract the reader who follows the signs
In shadow and moonlight and footprints on snow,
Beyond the sunset and behind the rainbow.
As smallest birds flight will bestir greatest tree
Each of these mysteries shows Her to me.
