Laek da son an' mon
We gied waanderin roond, yit
Never tagidder
Du wis laek da Son -
Waarm an' full o life; dy smile
Sent awaa shaedoos.
I wis laek da Mon -
Caald, dark, waantin fir life
Till dy licht shon on me.
Dan ee nicht , dat kyiss,
Dat kyiss athoot ony end
Afore we pairtit.
Laek da son an' mon,
A Wirld an' a day atween.
I will aye mind de.

Like the sun and moon
We went wandering round, yet
Never together.
You were like the Sun -
Warm and full of life; your smile
Sent away shadows.
I was like the Moon -
Cold, dark, wanting for life
Till your light shone on me.
Then one night, that kiss,
That kiss without any end
Before we parted.
Like the sun and moon,
A World and a day between.
I will always remember you.
Author's Notes: For Svetlana; written in the autumn of 1994.
'Nashledanou' (pronounced something like 'nas-khlay-da-na-ow') is a Czech word meaning 'farewell' or 'till we meet again.
Originally written in Shetland dialect, the haiku structure of the stanzas don't work entirely in standard English.
In Shetland the informal pronoun 'du' is still used colloquially, following the same grammatical rules as 'thou'. Again, this doesn't quite work in standard English.
Also, there should be an umlaut on the 'o' in 'Mon', but I don't know how to format this.
