Andrea's Lullaby

Unloosed from Rhiannon's hand the minstrel flew,
Through faery skies of purple flecked with gold,
To wing through portals veil’d for vault of blue
Where evanescent clouds throng and unfold.
We sensed the beating of the plumèd wings
But neither saw nor heard the phantom flight
Of that foreboding bird who seldom sings
Till one is chosen for its carol bright.
And here a lady, weary in her pain,
Rode the shadowy realms which dreamings weave,
Between reality and souterrain
That Morpheus had afashioned for her leave.
Drew nigh the wingèd herald to her side
Where soft did sing its tender lullaby.
Her spirit heard and joined the feathered guide,
Forth to Pedryfan’s barbican to fly.
So from our sight was ta'en our friend and kin,
Her weary journey with its rigours o'er,
To dwell a space in halls of Kaer Sidin
Where from the cup the wines of welcome pour.

Author's Notes: Written in memory of Andrea who died tragically on 16th January 1998 at the age of 48 following a valiant battle against a lengthy illness. Indeed it could be any departed soul’s ‘lullaby’.
