Gwydyon’s Diatribe

by Kynran
 Age Group: Adult

Lo the wrath of My kinsmen And cry of The warband Have smashed the Great Barrier Twixt Abred and Ceugant.
With tumultuous thunderings Rousèd was I, Ever guided and called By red phantoms of rage! The battle is no longer Thine, O Gwerin, (warband) But of Gwydyon ap Dôn, The Disposer of Wrath!
Hear well, thou enemy Of this mighty Cantrydd. (kingdom) Approaches a whirlwind From my gauntlet of death In which echoes the belling Of ravening hounds - A-thirsting for blood As they seek out thy threshold. O unjust viper Of monstrous putrescence, Thou cursèd diffuser Of evil and treachery, Hard in pursuit And on leathern wings Fly the terrible Dragons Of Royal Beleu, Their talons of iron To slash soul from body.
O black night winds Of veilèd Eryri, On spur my steed To full rampant slaughter!
Then stifled in fear Must thou turn to behold The countenance dread Of thy vengeful pursuer, The gen'rous Bestower Of fierce devastation, Scything viciousness, Annihilation!
With upraised broad-axe, Shatter and split I Thy loathsome helm That thy skull, now a-gape In torment exquisite, Swift vomit forth Its black raging evil - A disgust to the righteous! Anon shall the wine-press Of Annwn's abyss Grind all that compriseth Thine unspeakable foulness, To scatter it forth In the charnel-house drear.
With spear that has rent Full million asunder, Transfix I and force thee To inglorious submission Firm on the rim Of enthralling Kylch Abred. (wheel of rebirth)
Thus do I chain thee With terror encramped, As Blade of Destruction, First poised o'er the heart, Thrusts downward to impale That vile organ of malice And blast thee anew Through the chill Gate of Ochren! (Ochren = place of departed spirits)
Emelltith Gwydyon ap Dôn A'r hon Gymry oll! (The curse of Gwydyon ap Dôn And that of all Wales!)
Tranc At Y Gelyn! (Death to the enemy!)

Author's Notes: In the 4th branch of The Mabinogion it is simply stated:- “Those two men were put opposite one another, they were armed and they went into combat. Through strength and valour, aggression and enchantment Gwydyon prevailed and Pryderi was killed. He was buried at Maen Tyuynawc, above Velen Rhyd, and there his grave is.” (This is the translation from Middle Welsh.)
Now here is what I imagined some 43 years ago the thoughts of Gwydyon Ap Dôn to be during his duel with Pryderi . I heard this diatribe build up in Gwydyon’s mind as I wrote it – a vicious procession of thoughts marching ever on as grew the battle-rage which finally obliterates his adversary. (This is the Sun God in his aspect of Brenhin Cadeu - King of Battles.)
Each line has 2 major beats like blows of a sword or battle axe which are maintained relentlessly to the end when the coup de grâce is given. The last 3 lines are in Middle Welsh – the original language of The Red Book Hergest and The White Book Rhydderch whence the inspiration of the Mabinogion was drawn. I just had to add these to wrench the mind back to the scene of a Welsh duel from pre-history.
