Durga

by Grey Willow
 Age Group: Adult

Mother dressed in red riding upon the lion of strength goes forth in to battle to save the world
The lords of the universe have called upon you the great and terrible general of armies has thrown them from their thrones down to grovel in the dust at his feet The Gods have no power to stop him
Gods have lent her their weapons From Shiva his trident From Vishnu his conch From Brahma his pot of blessed water the others have robed you and armed you with all the powers of creation and destruction
As you race ahead to meet your foe the bull headed one that does not listen the one who has made the world cry in pain Flowers spring up behind you on the path
The demon lord Mahisa struts in front of you snorting his foul breath to the stars dizzying them so they fall You smile a terrible smile at his arrogance
Sword clashes against shield, spear against buckler Your eyes gentle and bright as a thousand suns meet his darker than the blackest abyss
Weapon to weapon you strive against one another Your arrows pierce his thick skin red rain smokes into the ground
With the blessed water you splash him it steams angrily against his hide Mahisa bellows in pain, his horns raking the skies sliding back, his hooves carve valleys in the stone bones of the Earth
Changing forms he seeks to escape you As a man he raises his spear again you, o powerful and gentle Mother, bat it playfully to the left with a brush of your hand
Turning into an elephant stronger than the stars he ropes his massive trunk around your blessed mount's neck
Your beautiful eyes darken in anger Fight me! Do not harm others smaller than you! Raising your dusky arm to the sky You set the divine conch to your lotus bud lips
The triumphant tone of a thousand heralding trumpets spreads across the cosmos as a new dawn unfolding like a velvet rose
Mahisa shifts back to man holding his ears in pain he crumples to the ground
You bend down to pick him up Enraged he slashes at you with his sword Smiling serenely, you bring him to his feet Grinning evilly, he swings again
Your shield blocks the blow shattering sword into fine slivers of glass casting it aside as rain As you bring your husband's trident down
Heart is pierced, Eyes finally open Looking on you with love the love of a lost child finding Mother after so long
Blood flows in rivers red, sliding down his chest As you gentle Mother gather him softly to your breast
The glow is released from him that fought the tide for so long Hugging him close, it flows into you your blinded child is back with you
The cosmos springs into bloom and raises a glad cry Salutations to the Mother Reverence to Durga Savior to the three worlds
You smile o, Mother at reclaiming another of your lost children at the restoration of the balance and shed a tear at what's been done
The Gods come to bless you thanking you for the work only you could do consoling you for the work that you had to sad because they could not do more
You raise a hand blessing them in return for they are your children as well, and promise to come when they need you again
Author's Notes: This poem is based off of a myth about Durga, the warrior goddess. Mahisa is a demon that personifies the stubborness and blindness within us all. She kills that within us, restoring us to balance.
