Lady of learning
seated on a lotus
your bright eyes
watch all
Wherever the word is written
you are there
wherever songs are composed
you are there
Your deft hands weave
the knowledge of the world
You grant liberation
through jnana
through the practical
learning and knowledge
that comes with life
Experiences that we go through
day-by-day
every trial
every triumph
joy, pain
are all notes that
your nimble fingers
pluck from your heavenly vina
Your water of insight
fuels the desires of us
to learn more everyday
to get up when we fall
when the path is too dry
you refresh us with a drink
You shine a light on our path
when it is too dark to see
you are the muse that drives us
to read, paint and express ourselves
in the wee hours of the morning
you are the candle that illuminates
the dusky corners of our minds
to bring out our creativity
I bow over my folded palms
and offer you sweet rice and milk
while the incense of sandal
dresses you in white veils
I whisper praises to you
before I set out to learn
what I am to learn today

cast your kind glance upon me today
Author's Notes: The goddess of learning comes in many forms. Sarasvati is both the goddess of learning and of the spoken or sung word. She along with Ganesh are the two gods that are invoked before the start of any task, to help in the obsticles and grant grace to the devotee.
