Beings of the Wood

by Grey Willow

Age Group: Adult

The air is so green
so full of life
I take a deep breath
thanking the Lord and the Lady
for giving me this day

The sunlight in Alaska's summer
is almost forever
My feet tread a path
bedecked with the rich loam
of countless seasons past

Out of the corner of my eye
I see a slight movement
is it a trick of the light
golden through the trees' canopy?

I whistle a tune
sort of off key
I feel a presence
deep in my bones
a harmony, a rhythm,
silently in the undertone

Looking deep into the wood
I see forms moving
I cannot quite make them out
light sparkles in the branches
patterns on leaves
I swear I see faces
looking back at me

Large and small
the creatures of the wood
the Old Ones carry themselves
like the nobility and gentry
of the old courts

Eyes in the many hues
of the earths green lands
some look familiar
some look strange and beautiful
Bedecked in the Mother's bounty
of fruits of the Earth and Heavenly Jewels

I feel the breath of their passing
so very close to me
I feel honored by their presence
I bow to them in thanks
for letting me see their world

I turn and make my way back
to the world of my own
to the busy schedule of a 27 year old
Before I step out of the green
I thank them for allowing me to tread
upon their domain

The darkest hour in Alaska
during the summer
is no deeper than twilight
a perfect purple

The moon rides the sky
the color of an emperor's cloak
a pearl dancing among the folds

I slip out quietly
to the edge of the woods
I walk to a willow
with gifts in hand

Precious polished stones
shells from the sea
fresh baked bread and a pitcher of milk
for the ones that live in the trees

I leave it in the care of the willow
a gift for them all
an offering of my world
an offering of friendship, honor and thanks

I hope to see them again

Author's Notes: The world is full of mystery and beings much older than us. I am glad and proud to honor them.
