I wonder if many of us
look back at the past we have woven
see through a younger self's eyes
Turning the pages of our history
see the past that courses through our blood
to clearly see what we have become
The child we once were
our joys, our fears
the promise of an inexhaustible future
stretching before us
The toys have come and gone
some toys we have with us still
the stories that have lead us
to that path in the wood
The lessons we have learned
both from book and experience
are they leading us still?
or have we outgrown them?
Teenage years have passed in a flash
the trials the tribulations
that have forged the links of steel
Identity found, innocence lost,
we built new bridges as we burnt the old
Finding our way in this
new adult life
we find that the ones that have passed before us
are with us still
The lessons that our parents learned
are sometimes the ones we walk
yet we bring our own ideas
we tread our own path
I find that the older we get
we still have someone young
deeply inside of us
wanting to run
Responsibility often comes first
everything else last
Sometimes we just have to give
the younger-self a great big hug
Dry their tears
calm their fears
and hold the child-within-us' hand
as they lead us to play
and walk into the wild wood
Author's Notes: I try every once in a while to let the "kid" come out to play. I often give my "younger self" a big hug if she needs it. Maybe we need to look at the changes that our lives have gone through. Then we may see just how much has stayed the same.
