Spirit of the Wild
by Grey Willow
Age Group: Adult
Wind over the tundra
scent of mild flowers and water
while hopping from tussock grass to tussock grass
Lancing bright white
off of the glacier nestled in the mountain
the clean smell of fresh snow
on a cold winter's day
The wind talking in the trees
Aspen and Spruce whispering
to one another with their secrets
Soft fur under fingertips
sable grey and silver
pussywillows on the spring branches
Lambent pearl of the moon
rising over the jagged peaks of the mountains
casting a path of gold and silver light
across the calm waters of the bay
Eagle winging silently
over the cover of forest
calls out a piercing cry of triumph
as he captures a salmon from the waves
Waters of turquoise
flowing swiftly down from the cold fields of ice
that are a thousand years old
Running to meet the icy blue waves
of the northern seas
The sharp bite of slate and shale
underneath tender toes
dipping reverently in frigid liquid
letting the sea taste me
Velvet green of grass
many layered scent of leaf mold
deep and brown at the feet of the trees
Somewhere, somehow
the spirit of the Wild
will speak to us all
only if we listen
Author's Notes: The varied habitats and places that you can experience the Wild in Alaska are enormous. I only hope that we will continue to keep them this way.
