A Fine Night For Magick

by Grey Willow

Age Group: Adult

It's a fine night for magick,
the full moon is riding high
in the sky's dark cloak
spangled with diamond-bright stars.

The Aurora Borealis dances
as a watercolor scarf
Greens, blues, rare reds
flicker down from the north

A chill breeze blows through
the frost covered trees
It's cold breath sends sparkling
flakes to drift across the snow

Beautifully frigid outside,
the wind colors my cheeks
with the hue of the red rose
I turn to go inside where it is
toasty and warm

It's a fine night for magick
softly the sounds of flutes and drums
drift from speakers on the stereo

Candlelight flickers
over smiling faces of the Gods
Cats are purring within the circle
eyes bright with anticipation
of tonight's events

Incense spirals sweetly upto the ceiling
the glow of the light
and the perfume of the temple
settles by the window
where the midnight hour peeks in

The salt of the earth on the altar
with the slight taste of the sea
glitters as the new-fallen snow
does on the ground outside

Blessed water in the chalice
fresh and sweet from the spring
Moonlight and aurora reflects
in sinuous patters across the surface

It's a fine night for magick
As the elemental quarters are called
One by one, east, south, west and north
By wind, by fire, by river and stone

Ancestors are welcomed
to the hearth with wine and honey bread
Above and below, all happy spirits
are given greeting and salutations

While the ones that may cause harm
are driven back,
with sound, clapping and song,
they are not invited

I lift my hands in prayer,
slowly, delicately to invoke the Gods
the cat's rumbles reverberate in the room

My eyes slowly open
as the words of a whispered chant
fall from my lips,
velvety rose petals

The feeling of subtle energy
circles around the sacred space
Music, purrs, chant, all in symphony

I breathe in... out....
I gently let go.....
Oh yes,
It's a fine night for magick!

Author's Notes: The idea for this poem came to me one night when the sky was alight with the aurora borealis.
It was too cold (-20 degrees F) that night, so I opted to do the full moon ritual inside. With the lights low so I could still see the night sky, my cats and I celebrated the night. It was fun!!!

Blessed Be,
Grey Willow
