The Sweetest Lady

by Llywelyn
 Age Group: Adult

Down there at the country store Stateline 205 Is where ya ought to go If it's not too far to drive
Where the boys are rough And the men are dirty And the true blue ladies that come Are too few But when they do They stand out like an early Blooming flower in the dew
But the sweetest lady I ever knew Down at Stateline had another side too Ya see, her beauty, like a flower in full bloom, Is best viewed from the seclusion Of a strictly PRIVATE room
And if the things that you say And the way that you say em Line up just right She might let you admire her beauty all night!
And though you might not think it At the moment you met her The sweetest of ladies might Write you a letter
And this letter would tell ya The way that ya struck her, The way that you spoke, Stroked, tickled and poked her!
It was kind of ironic, That she chose to be a trucker `Cuz when she was down like four flats, She was tighter than lugnuts!
And keeping this in mind, I couldn't help but wonder What kind of a person Would make her heart flutter?
And apparently you can forget it, If you have a beergut. But if she likes you, Then she might do, All kinds of things I don't even know what!
Because the sweetest lady that I ever knew Had a little naughty hobby And if you don't think it's true Just treat her real nice And she might write a letter about you
Author's Notes: This one I wrote years back when I worked at a truckstop close to where I live in Alabama. For a long time before she revealed her secret letters to me, she'd been coming in the store, always with a smile and a few simple words of encouragement. She was soft spoken, and quiet, though not shy. I came to look forward to her visits, and rely on her positive attitude. She was so nice and proper, it came as quite a shock when she revealed to me some of the things she wrote to her boyfriends. It made me laugh so hard I knew I had to write a poem for her. When I read it to her, she started crying, as I remember. Apparently she was touched that a stranger would do something like that for her. So while this is another one of those poems not like the rest, I felt I had to include this one too, for the other see "Southern Practicality."
