Darkened Legacy

Huffed up politicians
Sitting on their hands
From the highest authority
Come the deluded demands
Commander in chief
With bloodlust in his eyes
Gives authoritative commands
And backs `em up with lies
Terror and betrayal, and weapons massive
Naught but a veil to draw over eyes,
Drawn over to cover
Their owner's demise
Money and oil, the gold's no longer yellow
Rich men with brown skin
And ineffectual spies
Politics make very strange bedfellows
When will the nation
With befuddled administration,
Stop putting its money
In the mouth of foreign relations?
Will the ship sail true?
And to its course can it hold?
Or will it capsize or spin, out of control?
Not even sages know what the future will hold
But you know how the story goes
When everything's been told
The secrets come out,
All the lies laid bare
And I'm afraid we're all due
For a bit of a scare
Because the truth sometimes
Is quite a thing to behold
And I half expect to see it
Before I'm grown old
.....and half hope I won't.
Author's Notes: I wrote this after the start of the war in Iraq, after it came out that there were no "weapons of mass destruction" we'd been hearing so much about on the news. I was infinitely disgusted with our government at the time, and this poem is a result if my feelings at the time.
