The Altar of All-World

by Mysteries Child

Age Group: Adult

At the end of Their travels
Each one must stand alone
At the Cross, at the Battle,
at the Altar of stone.
They stand in the Hands
of all Gods that are known
They stand at the Altar of All-World.

Here have They journeyed
through all nights and days
Transcending the Veils
They have wandered the Ways
They arrive at long last;
the great burden They lay
to rest on the Altar of All-World.

They whisper Their thanks
for the kindness They've known
and They take up the Blade
of ancient oft-weilded stone
Their blood feeds Their children
for we all are Their Own--
One at the Altar of All-World.

With the Spear in the side
with the Knife in the breast
the Ones Who Endure
again take up Love's Test
The myriad worlds blur
as Their eyes close in rest,
in sleep on the Altar of All-World.

When the Life-Gift is given
They open dazed eyes;
bearing wound-scars of
Love's sweet, brutal magic They rise
and They walk in the Dream
of innumberable skies,
the Dream of the Altar of All-World.

Author's Notes: A mythological work-in-progress, incorporating stories from a variety of myth cycles. A tribute to those who give of themselves for the sake of what they hold in their hearts to be true.

A verbalization of something that started relentlessly knocking about inside my head during Samhain services. Now maybe I can sleep!

Feedback is welcome; if I missed your Tradition completely, you're welcome to help me incorporate it.

Though the sacrifice discussed is clearly literal, please bear in mind that I DO fancy this to be something of a literary work, and therefore even literal actions should be taken to have symbolic value instead.

The author does not advocate human or animal sacrifice, willing or otherwise. Something of equal value and less devastating impact can be found.

Yet, many across all labels and traditions have been left with little recourse but to literally lay down their lives for the sake of remaining true to what they have Believed and Taught--and done it gladly rather than live with self-betrayal.

Be blessed.
