Rite of Binding

by Mysteries Child
 Age Group: Adult

"...To love, honor, and cherish, to have and to hold, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, for as long as you both shall live."
When did those words go from ritual to tradition?
When did that binding become simply a cue to kiss?
If our mouths speak the truth of our hearts the magic remains.
Author's Notes: I am not against divorce by any stretch of the imagination. Sometimes terrible things happen, things to which no one should be bound no matter the seriousness of the oath. Sometimes people simply change, or are incompatible from the start, and it is far better to be functional apart than destructive together.
I do wish, though, that more people treated that oath as something sacred instead of merely traditional, and contemplated what they were getting themselves into before it is sworn.
I know it's horriffically impractical, but sometimes I really do think a marriage license should require a year and a day waiting period.
Of course, if one does not treat contemplation seriously, that too would be only tradidtion.
Don't even get me started on same-sex marriage... Something has desecrated the marriage bond for sure, but trying to say same-sex marriage is that thing is an act of worse than idiocy and cowardice.
I guess what has really committed the desecration is thoughtlessness. Simple stupid human thoughtlessness.
Father and Mother bless the Lutheran minister who took time to talk to us and consider our relationship on its own merits...
...and still got it all done in under twenty hours spread over less than three months.
He is a true Man of God.
