Devil's Decision

by Mysteries Child
 Age Group: Adult

Young woman, I see so much potential in your eyes. In your work, in your insights. In such a short time, I see a few beginnings... and so much potential.
Young woman, you've been f*cked over. By the educational system, by society, by your friends, by yourself. Thirteen isn't too late. You could come so far so fast if you'd let yourself, and I see the desire to do it in your eyes. Hear it in your voice. Read it in the energy you radiate.
I can't quit thinking about what you said today. I told you that you'd found the answers to three-quarters of the test in forty-five minutes. Your eyes went so wide. The words "holy sh*t" have never sounded so good from a young woman's mouth.
I'd like to give you every minute, every hour, that we can grasp. You could go so far, so fast... but it's a process of trial and error, and time is not on our side.
Young woman, there's so much fear in my heart. I already know you'll lie when it suits you. That's not atypical for thirteen-- I remember. I was a first-class prevaricator fifteen years ago, and I didn't need reasons to lie.
Young woman, I'm a Pagan. You don't know that, and neither does your mom. S----- only knows because fear made me tell her when I started working with you. I don't believe in advertising. I don't have much faith in the legal system, or that the innocent will be protected. If my heart followed some other Path, maybe-- but my convictions mean I'm guilty even if I can prove myself innocent.
I can't quit thinking about it. I can't sleep tonight because the library closed an hour before your mom came to get you. I was alone with you for an hour and a half today.
I'd like to give you every minute, every hour we can grasp. You could come so far; thirteen is just in time. But teaching you to learn is a process of trial and error, and time is not on our side.
Young woman, which do I risk?? My future, or yours??
Author's Notes: I volunteer as a tutor for an after-school program. I love working with my new student. She's bright as a button and just doesn't know it yet because, like so many others, she's been taught that "different" is "defective."
I love watching her test the concept of spreading her wings. And yes, the depressive with no self-worth in my loves knowing that I've been part of making it happen. The part of me that thought Asperger's Syndrome meant I was useless for life loves knowing that my so-called "disorder" gives me the understanding, empowerment, and dogged perseverance to help.
She needs more time and a different environment than the program can provide. And I know how to give it to her. There are libraries in every town.
But I'm afraid, so very afraid. I believe in believing the possible victims of abuse, because I know first-hand how hard it is to come forward to talk about it even in a supportive environment.
I also believe in stereotypes, witch-hunts, and hysteria.
And I'm so very, very afraid.
