The Hunt

by Espirit Invictus
 Age Group: Adult

O moonlight, thine eyes aglow, And thy face of silver hues, Dost thou turn a bright eye To the shadowed world below?
As they, above, a radiant sliver Shed upon the darkened grove, The wayfarer below doth creep And flow as a swift, fell river.
And in silence held, with breathing stilled, The lurker finds a waywent mark Yet slow must be, o traveller born, Lest he that means to kill be killed.
Take thine aim, dear soul, be pure: And so he does, yea, so he does The tightened line make quick And his master's eye make sure.
So now the feathered fiend doth spring For glory and for life, To catch and snare, with grim intent, A cumbersome and beastly king.
O moonlight, thy face set bold, Thy features stone and stiff, Thou dost witness there above The fragile life we hunters hold.
Author's Notes: This poem actually has a double meaning, and was written while contemplating a painting of a Native American hunting pair. The elder of the two had his bow at the ready with the full moon overhead, and was preparing to loose upon a bear. The younger knelt, watching, and seemed to be thinking deeply. I've always felt that the young hunter was somehow trying to express spiritually that feeling of remorse that comes from the final realization that death is a natural part of life, the passage into true wisdom that allows you to take the more brutal aspects of the Cycle with the gentler ones and be at peace with the Balance.
As you can see, the first telling is simply a pondering done, perhaps, from the mind of the young hunter watching his elder teach him about the ways of life. The second telling, however, touches on the fact that all living things, no matter how gentle, are in some ways hunters. And in our inevitable pursuit of life we are always threatened by the loss of it.
