Gay Pride Festival

by Nebkheperure
 Age Group: Adult

A Letter To The Editor As Appeared on Wednesday, May 24, 2000 The Sentinel Record Gay Man cites misconceptions Dear Editor, My name is Brian Scott. I am a 25 year-old gay white male. I currently work here in Hot Springs and lived here for three years previous to moving to Little Rock. I am writing this letter in response to a letter published in the May 15th paper. It concerned the morality of the Gay Pride Festival scheduled to take place in Hot Springs this week end. First of all, What is immoral about being honest about who you are? What is immoral about having pride in yourself? Are these not the virtues all parents try to install in there children? As a young gay male, I can promise you it is by no choice of mine that I am gay. Accepting and having pride in what I am and what I believe was my only choice in the matter. After all, who would choose such a thing? Who would choose to be yelled at? Who would choose to be pointed at, screamed at and called things like “fairy, faggot, and queer?” Who would choose not to be able to marry the person they love? Who would choose to be told they are going to Hell? This brings me to my second point. I was raised Church of Christ and my lover is Jewish. Where in the Bible does it say, “Ye must be heterosexual or go to Hell, directly to Hell, do not pass go and do not collect 200 dollars?” Another misconception about the gay lifestyle is that it is based on sex. I and my “lover” have been together for four years. You have to admit that there is more than a friendship-type of love shared between us. Without the emotional bond common to that of a husband and wife in this day and age, a relationship like ours never could have lasted. Those who like pointing fingers are a good reason why I no longer live in your wonderful city. From my experience in Hot Springs, the majority of the populace is retired or just plain tired. Tired of a life they do not possess. There for, they pretty much have to get involved in everyone else’s. Look around, there’s an obvious reason why there is a church on every street corner and its not morality. Morally you would think that all of the churches could get together for a common goal. I find this to be true with the non- religious factions in Hot Springs as well. Has anyone ever stopped and thought about why tourism, for that matter all industry other than funeral homes and cemeteries, are down in Hot Springs. I will give you one good reason. These so called moralist. They have nothing or little to do all day, obviously not work, and they sit around and judge everyone else’s lifestyles. They take it upon them selves to say it is immoral to do things like teach teenagers how to use condoms and prevent a lot of babies being thrown in dumpsters or injected with deadly chemicals. Then there is the miss-quote that gay people propagate the HIV virus. If I’m not mistaken, teen-agers are now at highest risk for HIV. The same teen-agers it is immoral to teach the use of condoms to in school. It is my truest intention not to criticize others in this letter but to turn the light to a little more pressing matters in the Hot Springs community than a group of grown people getting together to celebrate life and have a good time. If I have offended anyone, I apologize. That was not my intention. Peace, Love, Joy Brian Scott
